AI tools and your charity
Trustees and volunteers in small charities are already using AI tools to draft minutes, funding bids and social media posts, whether or not the board has discussed it.
Used sensibly, they can save a lot of time. The risks are mainly around information. Pasting beneficiary details, safeguarding notes or draft board papers into a free online tool may mean that data is stored outside your control.
A short policy, agreed by the board, can cover the basics:
- What the charity is happy for AI tools to be used for
- What must never be entered, such as personal data or confidential board business
- That someone checks the output before it is used or sent
- Who to ask if unsure
It doesn't need to be long. One page is usually enough.
